Service Description

Sacred Pulse: Introduction to the Mediterranean Style Frame Drum (Tar) A 3-Part Series for Beginners Focusing on Drumming Basics and Drumming as a Sacred Practice The sacred technology of the drum is calling to women around the globe. As instruments of power, healing, community, prophecy, wisdom, and resistance, frame drums offer a wide range of benefits. Modern science has shown how drumming can reduce stress, improve focus, boost immunity, enhance memory, and awaken our inner wisdom. There is much to discover! What does the drum represent? How do we play it? Why is this ancient instrument relevant today? How does drumming heal us? Learn some of the history of the drum and its relationship to the Goddess, the elements, and our ancestors. In this class, we’ll learn to embody the pulse of the drum and practice simple rhythms to begin developing our relationship with it. This class is not about performance, although you will learn the basic playing methods. Our focus will be about using the drum as a personal tool for meditation, ritual, prayer, healing, and relaxation. Classes are informative, instructive, practical, and participatory in nature. We will practice, play, and have time for questions and conversation. This class is for women only. No prior experience necessary. Class Details: 3 Sessions, 90 minutes each 4.5 hours of video content, plus emails with class prep, handouts, and homework. You should plan at least one hour collectively of study/practice time between classes. (Information will be emailed each week with ZOOM link) Recordings of classes will be available to registrants for 3 weeks after the last session. Instructions of accessing recordings will be shared with registrants. Zoom Sessions: LIVE on Fridays: April 4th, 11th, and 18th 3 PM - 4:30 PM EST Investment: $88 for the entire series What to Bring: (NOTE: More details will be shared to registrants before the first class) Your drum (if you have one) A glass of water A notebook or handouts (if applicable) While it’s not required, having a frame drum will enhance your experience. This class focuses on the Ancient Mediterranean Frame Drum, which is traditionally played with the fingers. (Note: This is not a class for Buffalo or Medicine Drums played with mallets.) For a good beginner drum, I recommend Remo Fiberskyn or Renaissance Frame Drums, sizes 14 or 16 inches. These can be found online at West Music, Sweetwater, Steve Weiss Music, or Amazon, and range from 30-$65.
